About the artists:
Jonathan Bäckström is a Finnish bassist, composer, and improviser based in Helsinki. Over the past decade, he has established a distinct presence across Northern European jazz and experimental music, working within acoustic, electroacoustic, and cross-disciplinary settings. He holds a master's degree from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. His collaborations stretch far beyond genres, featuring names such as Fredrik Ljungkvist, Eva Lindal, Raoul Björkenheim, Eero Koivistoinen, Mikko Innanen, Márk Bartha, and Kaj Chydenius.
His solo exploration of the bass unfolds as a dialogue between instrument, body, and space. Through this practice, he investigates acoustic and psychoacoustic perception using listening, improvisation, and extended techniques.
Ida Alanen is a Finnish pianist, composer and improviser based in Amsterdam. She is performing actively in various project in the European contemporary jazz and improvised music scene. In the past years she has engaged in various cross-disciplinary projects and collaborations with visual artists, such as composing music to Melek Mazici's light installation ”Rooms of Light” in LUX Helsinki 2026. She has a Master's degree from the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she studied with Harmen Fraanje. Since January 2026 she is also a co-lecturer at the Conservatory of Amsterdam on textural improvisation.
Her solo set is an exploration on textures, shapes and patterns inspired by visual art and multisensory experiences of urban and natural phenomena.
