Joseph Haydn: Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 9
Mahler, awaiting death, composed the ninth symphony to the rhythm of his weakening heart. The work begins with a sigh of farewell, but as Mahler squeezes every drop of happiness and misery from an intense life, the farewell is more a beginning than an end. Nicholas Collon and the RSO embark on an unforgettable journey through the symphony. But there is no shadow without light, so fortunately cellist Senja Rummukainen steps onto the stage bringing the sunshine and festive spirit of Haydn’s cheerful concerto.
