Description
Finland's most interesting guitarist, named Petri Kumela, continues his series of popular solo guitar concerts at Musiikkitalo. The program is again far from ordinary. The concert will also premiere Kumela’s new album “Tempered Guitar” (Alba Records), which contains music by Jacquet de La Guerren, Bach, Tiensuu and Hill for microtonal guitar. The first half of the concert is devoted to Baroque music, from two very different perspectives. Kumela has arranged for guitar the first keyboard series by French early‑Baroque composer Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerren (1665‑1729). After this relatively unknown and multi‑section work, we hear again one of the most famous single‑movement pieces of the late Baroque, Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685‑1750) Chaconne, BWV 1004, originally written for violin but for almost a hundred years also part of the standard classical guitar repertoire. The second half of the concert is filled with a brand‑new piece, the premiere of a forthcoming signature work: composer Lauri Supponen (*1988) Millefleurz for guitar, electronics, video and sofa. Supponen is one of our most original and likable composers. He describes his work as follows: Inspired by medieval thousand‑beautiful‑pieces, Millefleurz is a surreal parade for six guitar tongues, a cracked sofa, inconsistently sized animals and all the flowers that are allowed to bloom. Kumela plays all pieces on a microtonal classical guitar, which enables historical and other non‑equal‑tempered tuning systems.
