Description
Johanna Kultala & Workgroup: Fear Has Big Eyes - A tragicomic object theatre performance about the fear of being left behind. What to hold on to when the future offers only uncertainty and the horror of an unlived life pounds at the back of your head? When did life escape to the horizon and leave you behind the blinds to watch, to seek certainty from the predictions forming on the surface of toast? "Fear Has Big Eyes" is a solo work built through object theatre and movement expression, in which the human physiological threat system overheats. The work ponders the individual's ability to cope amidst everyday fears when the future is unseen, the sense of control is only an illusion, and constant worry lurks around the corner. A dark shadow over the everyday struggle is cast by the inevitable finitude of life. Is there still time to wait and plan, to find the best possible moment among those on offer? Is it permissible to live content with the small and ordinary, when it is, after all, a unique LIFE? What if one morning you notice that all those hopes and deeds you meant to fulfill were forgotten somewhere in the noise of the past...and life drained down the drain. The performance seeks to understand the mechanisms of fear and examine its effects on the individual's life with sensitivity and comedic exaggeration. Fear is a universal subject and an uninvited guest in almost everyone's life. The performance has the potential to reach diverse audiences, as it is almost wordless: through object theatre and the performer's physical expression, the performance can be followed by, for example, a viewer belonging to a language minority.
