Description
Jazz for lunch – yes please! The popular lunch concerts of Savoy-teatteri and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra continue again in the autumn season 2026! Free tickets for this concert can be reserved from Thu 8 Oct at 3 pm at Savoy-teatteri and Lippu.fi; read the detailed instructions below.
UMO’s woodwind specialist Max Zenger guides the audience into the distinctive world of American jazz as his quartet interprets the music of the Jimmy Giuffre 3 ensemble and the eponymous 1957 album. Zenger himself takes on Giuffre’s role, playing baritone saxophone and clarinet, and is joined on stage by guitarist Rene Willman in the role of Jim Hall and bassist Filemon von Numers in the role of Ralph Peña. A special addition to the concert is drummer Mikko Hassinen, who has arranged the drum parts for Giuffre’s music, turning the trio into a quartet.
Giuffre’s compositions blur the boundaries between jazz, blues and American folk music. The almost entirely through-composed music contains harmonic and melodic choices that deviate from the norms of its era. The concert offers calm and profound soundscapes that will appeal to fans of both jazz and American roots music.
The UMO Helsinki Ensemble is a smaller group formed from the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, whose musicians have extensive careers both within UMO and in numerous personal projects. The concert program has been designed by saxophonist Max Zenger, who also leads the ensemble.
