Our Time Music Lecture Series
Our Time Music Lecture Series is the Sibelius Academy's own lecture series on composition and music theory, where the field's most current professionals talk about and discuss their work and pieces. Five public lectures are held in the Music House auditorium on Thursdays from 13:15 to 14:45. The lectures are in English.
The Thursday afternoon lecture series began in the 1960s as a composition seminar. New compositions were presented publicly and polemical discussions were held about them. The name Our Time Music Lecture Series became established in the 1980s.
Guests of the series have included numerous Finnish and international composers, such as Aulis Sallinen, Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, Kalevi Aho, Jukka Tiensuu, Olli Mustonen, DJ Orkidea, etc. Among foreign guests, mention should be made of Krzysztof Penderecki, who came to collect the Sibelius prize, American minimalists John Adams and Steve Reich, Chaya Czernowin, Per Nørgård, Louis Andriessen, Mark Andre, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Phill Niblock, Brett Dean, Sunleif Rasmussen and Tom Johnson.
In addition, many other contemporary music and art professionals, musicians, writers, visual artists, directors, choreographers have spoken about their work. Among guests, for example, writer Veijo Meri, neurologist Matti Bergström, violinist Pekka Kuusisto and associate professor of Japanese aesthetics Minna Eväsoja.
Over the years the series has been hosted by, among others, professors Einojuhani Rautavaara and Paavo Heininen, lecturers Tapani Länsiö, Juhani Nuorvala and Riikka Talvitie, and composer Matthew Whittall. Currently the planning is handled by composer and music theory art teacher Niilo Tarnanen.
